Lutron Three-Way Switch Installation

The instructions on this page work for Lutron Caseta Three-way switch installations using a Pico Remote as the add-on switch. Do not use a normal mechanic 3-way switch as the add-on unless otherwise noted.

The references to the Options are found on the website Easy Do It Yourself Home Improvements where Chris (the author of the site) has done a great job of laying out the various wiring options. I encourage you to check out his site before reviewing the following wiring solutions.

All of these options require you to wire BOTH switch boxes. Please review the diagrams carefully. In certain cases, you will also need to re-wire the light(s).

IF YOU ARE NOT COMFORTABLE AND CONFIDENT IN WHAT YOU ARE DOING, CONSULT A LICENSED ELECTRICIAN IN YOUR AREA. AZHB.COM & DIY SMART HOME GUY ASSUME NO RESPONSIBILITY FOR THE CONTENT OR RESULTS. IF YOU FOLLOW THESE INSTRUCTIONS, YOU AGREE TO THESE TERMS.

NOTES:

  1. CAUTION – the white wire, which is normally a neutral wire, is being used as a power wire. It is HIGHLY recommended that you place a piece of black tape on both ends of the wire to designate the change in the intended purpose of the wire. Help yourself and the poor next guy that will try to figure this out.
  2. This wire is no longer required. For safety purposes, place a cap or wire nut on both ends of the wire. DO NOT connect this wire to other wires of the same color in the box.
  3. The neutral wire is no longer required in the destination box. However, since there is no power on this wire, it need only be capped in the destination box. You can cap both ends if you like, but to save space in the box, or to avoid future confusion, you may find it easier to only cap the end in the destination box.
